Festival of Timket is one Ethiopian festival not to be missed.. and Gondar is one of the best places to experience it.

The festival is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany and venerates Christ’s baptism in the River Jordan. It is regarded as one of the most colourful festivals of the Ethiopian Orthodox year. The highlights of the festival are the movement of the Tabots, a model of the Ark of the Covenant, from every local Ethiopian Orthodox church altar to one meeting place at Fasilides’ Bath. It is also at the bath where young boys will leap into the large pool in a ritual reenactment of baptism.

This tour will take place from January 19th – January 21st, 2016. We will fly up and back from Addis Ababa to Gondar.

Festival of Timket – 3 Day Tour

Day 1: Addis Ababa / Gondar

Take the morning flight to Gondar from Addis Ababa. After check in at the hotel, tour the famous castles of Gondar after which we will visit the Debre Berhan Selassie church.

After lunch, head to Medhane Alem Church to follow the procession of people taking the replica of the Ark of the covenant to Fasilides’ Bath. The Arks (or Tabots) from all the local Ethiopian Orthodox churches will also make their way to Fasilides’ Bath.

Fasil Ghebbi (Royal Enclosure)

Gondar

Fasil Ghebbi (Royal Enclosure) is the remains of a fortress-city within Gondar, Ethiopia. It was founded in the 17th and 18th centuries by Emperor Fasilides (Fasil) and was the home of Ethiopia’s emperors. Its unique architecture shows diverse influences including Nubianstyles. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Debre Berhan Selassie Church

Gondar

The Debre Birhan Selassie Church in Gondar is famed for its beautiful examples of Ethiopian church art. It was the only church in Gondar that survived the destruction inflicted by Sudanese Mahdist Dervishes in the late 19th century. The outside of the church is quite plain, but its interior walls are covered in art depicting biblical scenes, saints and angels.

Fasilides’ Bath

Gondar

King Fasilides commissioned the construction of what is know as Fasilides’ Swimming pool, or Fasilides’ Bath, beyond the the heart of the city north-west of the Qaha River. There is a two-storeyed battlemented palace standing in a square pool which receives it water from a canal filled by the river, but which is empty most of the time for sanitary reasons.
